“Yelewata IDPs Stage Benue Highway Protest, Call for Return Amid Ongoing Displacement”

Heavy traffic gridlock hit Yelewata, Benue State, on Wednesday as IDPs blocked the main highway, stopping vehicle movement.

Human rights activist Ukan Kurugh shared the incident on Facebook.

He said, “If you’re planning to travel into or out of Benue State, please put your journey on hold for now.

“At Yelewata, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have taken to the major highway, blocking both lanes for several hours, chanting in unison: “We want to go back home!”

Kurugh’s post revealed that the protest stranded numerous motorists and passengers, as the IDPs voiced anger over their long-term displacement and ongoing attacks by armed Fulani herdsmen. He also confirmed the incident in a phone interview with Daily Post.

He said, “Yes, the protest is still ongoing. The people are protesting that they want to go back to their homes.”

The Yelewata protest involved men and women who blocked the highway.

As of the time of filing this report, the road was still barricaded, and the protesters remained in place, while authorities have yet to issue an official statement.
